Higgins Community Helper Day 2014
Higgins Elementary first grade students recently learned about community helpers as part of their Social Studies curriculum. The students discussed the jobs and equipment used by different community helpers such as police officers, firefighters, paramedics and other first responders.

To conclude the unit of studies, students received a special visit from local community helpers. Lieutenant Jeremy Black from the Smith County Sheriff's Office orchestrated the Higgins First Grade Community Helper Day in partnership with the Whitehouse Police Department, Whitehouse Fire Department, and East Texas Medical Center Emergency Medical Services and Flight Crew.

During the visit, students were able to explore police vehicles, a fire truck and an EMS helicopter.

“This is always such an exciting event for our students,” said Tom Luce, Higgins Principal. “The first-hand experience is a great way to conclude the unit on community helpers, and we are very thankful to those who participate.”
